A young couple wanted to substantially increase the size of their ranch-style home on a quiet street in Durham’s Hope Valley neighborhood, but wanted to minimize the visual impact from the street.  With that goal in mind, Sasha designed an addition tucked behind the existing house, using a new kitchen to connect the old and new in an “H”-shaped plan.  The resulting house is more than twice as big but appears much the same size from the street.  The floor plan creates pleasant outdoor spaces, too, including a nestled hot tub deck accessible from multiple rooms, and a private rear screened porch and deck sheltered from the street.  A new, detached garage brings in daylight through high translucent panels and glows like a lantern at night.
